Is Hemp Oil good for your skin?

There is ongoing confusion since cannabidiol (cbd) and hemp oil hit the market. After researching I  am ready to reveal how hemp oil is good for your skin.

Hemp & Cannabis

I do believe we need to clear up some of these misconceptions.

The notoriety of the component THC is the main reason behind the foggy understanding of what these products are and how it is beneficial to our health .

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive component found in the marijuana/ cannabis plant. When we look at hemp it consists of less than 0.3 percent of THC. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non psychoactive component. All this means is whether you use hemp or CBD products you will not get high.

I’d like to focus on hemp oil, how to make it, the benefits for your skin and where you can buy it.

Hemp oil

Hemp oil is made by cold-pressing the ripened seeds of hemp plants and by an extraction from the stalk. The main ingredient that makes hemp so healthy to use is phytocannabinoids. Our bodies need these cannabinoids to function properly keeping our immune & digestive system up to speed and our brain health intact.

Hemp oil contains omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of 3:1, which is said to be the ideal ratio. It is also a rich source of a type of omega-6 fatty acid know as gamma linolenic acid (GLA).

Hemp oil is packed with all of these inflammation fighters. No wonder it helps heal your skin disorders!

Skin benefits

So we know it contains all the nutrients/vitamins/ fatty acids and mineral your skin needs. Now let’s need to find out how exactly hemp oil is good for your skin.

  • It helps to reduce oil and unclog pores which ultimately will prevent acne.
  • Calms inflamed skin and encouraged new skin cell growth.
  • Treats eczema by keeping the skin bacteria free preventing any infections and keeping it hydrated.
  • Treats dermatitis effectively as it moisturizes and soothe the irritation.
  • Prevents and treats aging through its moisturizing and omega- 6 properties which results in skin renewal.

Best ways to use

Before you get down to it, check for sensitivity. Do the patch test on inside of your arm to see if any stinging or swelling occurs. Normally for acne its most effective to apply directly to the skin and then rinse off after 5 min. Another good way is to mix it with carrier and essential oils. Make sure that no more than 3 drops of essential oil such as lavender or rosemary  along with 1/4 cup of hemp oil and 2 teaspoons of coconut or olive oil.

I did mention before medical experts have given a guideline of max two teaspoons per day. The point of taking it orally is to improve your overall health and not just applying on an affected area. You can also mix the oil in your salads and yogurts to consume easier.

As with all herbal skin care strategies it is always wise to consult with your doctor. Particularly if you are on any chronic medication, the actions of the herb may not work well with what you have been prescribed. It is recommended to start with half a teaspoon if taking orally and then as your body gets accustomed you may increase dosage.

Final words

When you ready to purchase make sure you look for brands that are organically certified and that they can produce a certificate of analysis, which will tell you exactly what levels of compounds are in the hemp oil. The extraction process will be indicated on the product and normally CO2 /ethanol and olive oil extraction methods are the safest and produce a better quality product.

So now you can decide if you want to go ahead and try hemp oil to treat a skin disorder. It is safe to use at the psychoactive components are non-existent and contains high amounts of omega-3 and omega-6, the exact ratio your body needs.

Leave your thoughts and comments below, I’d love to hear from you .

Till next time…

Love your skin naturally!
